MEET THE CHUNK SPELLING SYSTEM!
With the Chunk Spelling System, students work with one word family chunk each week. Using a beginning soundboard, they create as many words as possible. Next, they brainstorm “big” words that also contain the chunk. Example: the word caterpillar for the word chunk -at.
After compiling everyone’s words together into a class chart (a great discussion opportunity), students choose a set of words to work with for the week. Then they use the tri-fold activity menu to practice the words either in class or as homework.

Here's how it works
It starts with hands-on, interactive exploration of a word family! Students use a soundboard to see how many words they can create for this week's chosen word family chunk.
Now let's collaborate! The class works together to make one master list of all the words the students created in step 1, including beginning consonants, beginning blends and digraphs, and the "big" words they discovered for the word family.
Time for some teaching magic happens. As the class shares their words for the group chart, some misconceptions may arise and you may discover some words that kids don't know the meaning of. This is where you can help clear up misconceptions and do some on-the-fly vocabulary instruction.
Then it's time to choose! Students get the opportunity to choose their own set of words from the full list. It's much more powerful for students when they get to exercise choice about what words they want to study. And this step is flexible and can be formatted however works best for your class.
At the end of the week, it's time to do a quick assessment. You can either give the class the same spelling test or have students do partner tests to assess each other on their individual lists.

We used to do spelling the "old" way.
When we started teaching, we used the word lists from the basal. You know how this goes - each student had the same words with some extra words for the high kids.
After that, we tried variations on Words Their Way spelling lists, which was better but still not what we wanted.
